About me
I am an Engineer with a Master’s in Industrial Engineering. I obtained these degrees at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia. My master’s degree research in Industrial Engineering was recognized as highly distinguished by the university. It was part of a larger international, multidisciplinary research project linked to faculty at Old Dominion University (ODU).
In Fall 2023 I Joined to ODU as PhD student in Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. Michele Weigle.
To provide an overview of my research over the past few years, I have been exploring how communities respond to the arrival of refugees and migrants. This collaborative work has been conducted alongside fellow researchers and faculty members at the Storymodelers Lab. Our approach encompasses the utilization of survey research techniques, as well as the implementation of advanced tools such as machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) models. For a deeper insight into my educational background and professional journey, I invite you to explore my Bio.
Research Interests: Artificial Intelligence, Data Analysis, Data Science, NLP, Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Web Development, Modeling and Simulation.
Graduate Research Assistant
In addition to joining ODU, I have been given the privilege of serving as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Storymodelers research lab, linked to the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC), with whom I have been collaborating for approximately two years. This experience has been full of valuable learnings, interesting challenges, and enriching opportunities both in research and professionally. I also have the honor of contributing as a Graduate Research Assistant in the WS-DL (Web Science and Digital Libraries) research lab within the Department of Computer Science.

Bio
Jhon G. Botello is currently a PhD Student in Computer Science at Old Dominion University and graduate research assistant in the Storymodelers Research Lab. His research primarily focuses on social studies pertaining to migration, where he skillfully applies survey research and computational approaches. During his master’s studies, Jhon received prestigious funding through an international collaboration between Old Dominion University’s Storymodelers Lab and the Office of Naval Research, under the Minerva Research Initiative. This initiative not only shaped his academic journey but also allowed him to contribute significantly to the research field. His diverse research interests encompass a broad spectrum, including Machine Learning, Data Analysis, Social Science, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and the realm of modeling and simulation. Prior to pursuing his PhD, Jhon G. Botello successfully obtained a Bachellor and Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Universidad del Norte, Colombia, in 2023. His undergraduate studies were financed by the Government of Colombia under the Ser Pilo Paga 3 Initiative.
